Development in the Cloud
June 05, 2015
Did you already know? Since May we have been developing TekBASE 8 online with the #Cloud9 IDE. So far a local server with Linux and a simple editor like Bracket or Notepad++ was sufficient.
Cloud9 now offers the advantage that multiple programmers can work live on a file and the changes become instantly visible to others as you type. A small feature that we have become very accustomed to over the past weeks is that you no longer have to save files yourself, as this happens automatically after each input. We edit the code, call the URL to our Cloud9 environment in the browser and we immediately see the result. But even otherwise Cloud9 greatly facilitates development thanks to autocomplete, an integrated console with SSH access, and much more.
We also looked at Koding as an online IDE, but we were basically not as convinced as with Code9. Koding, however, offers every developer a lot of useful features such as snapshots and feels a little more modern.
For our final tests with various PHP versions and distributions we have been using the Strato Server Cloud and also DigitalOcean for over a year. Here we can create various VServers and only spin them up when needed to save costs.
Small tip: Today around 7 p.m. there is the TekBASE 7.3.7 update in the web interface (admin area). However, a new Ioncube version is required for this. The Ioncube version can already be updated now so that the new update can be used immediately. This is necessary because Ioncube recently released version 9 of the encoder.
